Marina Bay is a seaside neighborhood located just 15 minutes from the Richmond–San Rafael Bridge and 15 minutes north of Berkeley. The area is a hidden gem for families and visitors looking for a taste of the Bay Area.
Learn About the Captain’s House
Did you know that Lara’s Fine Dining sits on historic ground? The restaurant was originally a sea captain’s house. Joshua Hawthorn was a colorful character who eventually sold the property to the Poe family.
Interior designer Jacqueline K. Poe lovingly restored the property in 1985, working with BAR Architects to retro-fit the captain’s house for commercial use and painting its roof a signature bright red hue. To complete the nautical personality of the restaurant dubbed Hawthorne’s, Poe acquired an antique 120-foot English schooner from Denmark called The Jacqueline.
The ship and the restaurant’s welcoming red color welcomed visitors from all across the country. In 1986 Hawthorne’s won a Golden Nugget award for the Best Small Commercial Restaurant in the San Francisco Bay Area.
More than 35 years later, the property was rebuilt by fine dining entrepreneur Lara Choe. The historic property has been retrofitted from the ground up, with state-of-the-art amenities for events and community gatherings.
The Marina Bay Mermaid
Once a manufacturing hub, Richmond’s Marina Bay waterfront was transformed by the enterprising Poe family into a scenic community. Here’s a historic photo taken right on The Jacqueline - a mermaid who decided to pay Hawthorne’s Restaurant a visit.
Meet Lara
Lara Choe, the founder of Lara’s Fine Dining, is a self-made fine dining entrepreneur who is proud to call Richmond home. The restaurant is her 17th venture to date. And she is also the previous owner of The Hotel Mac Restaurant in historic downtown Point Richmond.
With 45 years of fine dining experience, Lara is pleased to welcome you to her newest restaurant in the heart of Richmond’s historic waterfront. One of her favorite things about the Richmond community is its hometown feel. Please come by and say hello!
